New Regional Programme to Attract R&D Centres in Strategic Sectors

Murcia Region will launch a dedicated programme to attract R&D centres in strategic areas for economic growth. This initiative reinforces innovation as a driver of competitiveness and productive specialisation.

The programme foresees up to 1 million euros in grants to support the establishment of new research and development centres. It aims to attract entities with high impact on key sectors, promoting knowledge transfer, talent generation and technological development.

Link with the Murcia Region Industrial Plan 2035

The promotion of R&D is integrated into the Murcia Region Industrial Plan 2035, which will guide industrial development over the next decade. Key technical elements include:

  • Development of the Escombreras Valley as a European hub for sustainable energy.
  • Strengthening of advanced chemistry, circular economy, biotechnology and high-value manufacturing sectors.
  • Up to 15,000 new industrial jobs projected.

Growth of R&D and consolidation of technological sectors

Murcia Region stands among the territories with the strongest recent growth in R&D investment. Biotechnology has expanded significantly, increasing from 9 million euros in 2009 to nearly 60 million today.

Murcia Region continues to show strong economic expansion based on competitiveness and internationalisation. Key indicators include:

  • Regional GDP growth above 4%.
  • Labour market exceeding 700,000 workers.
  • Exports close to 40% of regional GDP.

The new plan is complemented by regulatory improvements such as the Fourth Administrative Simplification Law, which facilitates the establishment of technological and industrial companies.
